MATHS HOME ACTIVITY: Adding objects together

In class today, one of the children explained that when he adds two numbers together he starts with the larger number, then he makes the smaller number using his fingers, then counts to find the total.

He explained his strategy so well that it prompted us to talk about the next step, which is the strategy of counting on.
Our question was 5 + 4, so we began with 5 then used our fingers to count 6, 7, 8, 9. Therefore, 5 + 4 = 9.

In our Math Daily 3 activities we used counters, drawings and fingers.

What have you added together at home?
What strategy did you use to get your total?

  1. Olivia counted some of her shopkins by grouping them in 2's.
She then counted out loud by 2's until they were all counted.
