Some Special Visitors

We had some very special visitors join us for play today; Primrose and Penny.
The children were thrilled to have the visit. Most wanted a cuddle, many got to feed and pat them.

Thank you once again to the wonderful Kiff family for yet another unforgettable experience!!

Vacuum Candle Experiment

What does fire need?
Fuel, oxygen and ignition.
So what happens if we place a lit candle in a bowl of water?
Nothing. The candle continues to burn.
What happens when you limit the amount of oxygen it has by placing a vase over the top?

When the candle uses all of the oxygen that is inside the vase, it begins to suck from the only gap there is, pulling the water inside.
Once the flame has used all of the oxygen it is extinguished.

Two of Our Seeds Have Sprouted!

This morning we checked on our sunflower seeds.
We had planted some seeds in egg cartons and some directly into the soil.
We did this to see which seeds would grow. Exactly one week after planting our seeds two that we planted directly into the soil have sprouted.
This sparked some interesting discussion about why these seeds have sprouted and not others.
In the mean time, we'll continue watering our seeds and hope they continue to grow!

Watch This Space

I am super excited about our Science unit this term. We have called it Science in Action. Each week we will be conducting an experiment. My main purpose is to engage the children in some fun activities but I also aim to teaching them how to hypothesise and question why things happen. We will change variables and observe outcomes.

Last term we planted some seeds. We were so excited about the prospect of looking out of our window to our very own veggie patch. Unfortunately, nothing grew. Out of our disappointment came a Science lesson:
What do you think went wrong?
What can we do differently the next time we plant our seeds?

So planted new sunflower seeds, making a number of changes. Now it is time to observe.
Let's just hope some of our seeds sprout this time!

I will do a post on each of our experiments as a means of journaling our learning and so that you are able to keep up with the exciting things that are happening in our class.
Watch this space!

What Does Term 4 Homework Look Like?

At the end of last term Mrs Harris and I sent home an outline of what Term 4 Homework will look like.

What has not changed?
1. Mathletics tasks. I have set tasks for this week.

2. Maths Home Activities. These activities will give you an indication of what we are learning about in class during Maths. I have set this week's activity under the Maths Home Activities tab.

3. Sight Words. At the end of last term we sent home a booklet containing all of the Kindergarten sight words. This is so you have the freedom to work through all of the sight words with your child at your own pace. We are also working on our sight words at school.

What has changed?
We will not be using the Homework Book and there will not be a weekly Homework sheet.
We have set a Personal Interest Project (PIP) for families to work on together. Presentations of the PIP will take place during Week 8 and will replace News for that week. An outline of the PIP can be found under the Homework tab.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to see me.

We Have Tadpoles!!

Cadence has chosen to learn about the life cycle of a frog for his PIP this term. During the holidays he and his mum caught some tadpoles from their dam and placed them in a fish tank to observe.
This morning Mrs Kiff very generously brought the tadpoles in so that all of the children in KC can be a part of this unique learning experience. This ties in so well with our Science focus this term of questioning and observing changes.
Thank you so much to the Kiff family for your generosity! We are so excited to have the tadpoles join in our learning fun!
