What is One Quarter?

Today we moved from the concept of one half to one quarter. We talked about the fraction symbol and the meaning of the number at the bottom.

During our Math Daily 3 rotations we explored this a little further.

The children drew the other half of a picture cut from a magazine

They also made a pizza and cut it into 4 equal parts. Ano cut his into eighths!

As a class activity we explored the notion of equal parts as getting a fair portion. We used Kit Kats to do this. We split into four groups of four. Each child cut a portion of their Kit Kat so that there were four equal portions.

Our last step was to draw what we made, then write the fraction.

I'm looking forward to our lesson on sharing into three equal parts.

Meet Mrs Ballard

Mrs Jesscia Ballard joined us yesterday. She is a university student in her final year. In fact, this is her final prac. After her term with us she will be a fully qualified teacher. Mrs Ballard is helping out at the moment, but eventually she will be teaching full days. This term she will be with us for a total of 10 days. Next term she will be with us full time.
I'm so happy to have Mrs Ballard with us. She is a very welcome addition to our class!

What is Missions Week all about?

Next week is Missions Week. It is a week of fund raising where 100% of the profit made goes towards supporting organisations such as orphanages in China, 100% Hope from Uganda and Operation Christmas Child.
Yesterday a note went home outlining the details. You can find a copy of it through the MACC App.
I thought it might be helpful to clarify a few things for those who are unfamiliar.

Helping Hand Tree
This is a tree that is made up of cardboard hands. Each hand has the name of an item (mostly medical or school supplies) that is needed by any of the orphanages we support in China. By taking a hand and purchasing the product on it, we are helping make life a little more comfortable for the children. There will be a helping hand tree in Primary from Monday. If you take a hand please leave the product you purchase at the office by Friday.

'M' Themed Mufti Day on Tuesday
Mufti days are always exciting (and a little stressful). Your child's outfit can be as creative or as simple as you wish.
My favourite 'M' to dress as is 'Me'!!
Please send a $2 donation in with your child on the day.

Missions Fair on Friday
All parents are invited to attend!
This will start at lunchtime. You still have the opportunity to pre order a sausage, bacon or bacon and egg sandwich or a burger with the works. You can do this through the MACC App. Drinks will be available for purchase on the day for $2.50.

The Missions Fair is made up of a range of different stalls from lollies, to nail polish, hair spray, guessing competitions and more. I will be running a slip n slide (please pray for that warm weather to return!!) so anyone who is able to help with the supervision of the children will be very much appreciated!

It's going to be an exciting and busy week!!

Friyay Disco Fun

We had a fantastic time at tonight's Friyay Disco. It was a little difficult to capture all of the children but I did manage to get a couple of shots:

Thank you so much to the Pe family (Ainlinn) who donated all of the drinks and snacks for the children tonight on behalf of the IGA at Leumeah. This is definitely a local business worth supporting.
We appreciate your generosity!!

Fun with our Japanese Visitors

This afternoon we finished a week with our Japanese visitors by attending an assembly they had prepared for us. It was a fun, light hearted way for them to share a little of their culture.

They dressed in beautiful kimonos

Demonstrated karate

Showed us the art of origami

And taught us a dance that is performed during a Japanese festival

It was a wonderful way to experience a little of another culture.

Well done KC!

Well, it has been the sickest we have been this week! On Monday 6 children we off sick and on Tuesday we were missing 5. On Wednesday I was off with a cold and we missed 4 of our friends yesterday and today. We still managed to have a great week and we had lots of unique experiences. We watched plays performed by students in Year 5 and 6 and we had Year 11 students share picture books they had written themselves. Not to mention our usual fun filled Kindy experiences.

Congratulations KC on a super week!
Well done Darcy, Joshua and Darcy. You have certainly earned your awards!!

Finding out for ourselves

Today the children had the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of capacity. They questioned, checked and explained findings.

First, each child chose two containers they thought might have the same capacity.

They filled one container with water, sand or rice.

Then checked to see which container has the greater capacity by pouring its contents into the other.

Some children we happy to find that they were right, and the two containers they chose do have the same capacity. Others were surprised when they found the capacity of the two containers they chose is very different.

Toy Catalogue Fundraiser

Most Kindergarten and Prep families have received two toy catalogues (a few in KC are waiting to be sent home). This is a fantastic opportunity for families and friends to get Christmas gifts organised (yes, Christmas will be here before we know it) and raise money for the purchase Kindergarten and Prep resources. The catalogue closes in October, but you certainly do not need to wait until then to send your orders in.
Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have!

How do you check if two containers have the same capacity?

That was a question we investigated in Maths today. We found two containers we thought might have the same capacity. We filled one with water then poured its contents into the second container.

We found that the second container has a greater capacity because the contents of the first did not fill it. Naturally, we wanted to see what would happen if we filled the larger container and poured its contents into the smaller container. We thought it might overflow, but we wanted to check anyway.

We will be doing lots more investigating this week.
Thank you for your outstanding photography Miss Darcy!!

Congratulations to Ellie, Caterina, Olivia and Isabella on your awards today!!

Taking Advantage of the Glorious Weather

Today we took to the outdoors during Maths.

We used chalk and counters to make groups.
This activity required turn taking and teamwork.

We have been practising using the "groups of" symbol (x), so our last step was to write the number sentence.

You can't beat learning in the outdoors on a glorious day!!
