Finding out for ourselves

Today the children had the opportunity to consolidate their understanding of capacity. They questioned, checked and explained findings.  

First, each child chose two containers they thought might have the same capacity. 

They filled one container with water, sand or rice. 

Then checked to see which container has the greater capacity by pouring its contents into the other. 

Some children we happy to find that they were right, and the two containers they chose do have the same capacity. Others were surprised when they found the capacity of the two containers they chose is very different.
