THE IMPORTANCE OF SIGHT WORDS

Although we placed an emphasis on sight words last term, this term we will increase our focus. We read over our sight words in class, in one way or another every day, and write them almost daily as well.  So, why the emphasis on sight words?

Sight words are words we know by sight. Many cannot be sounded out. Immediate recognition means having the ability to read and understand that word in any context. Developing a bank of sight words makes reading more fluent and enjoyable, not to mention opening up a whole lot of opportunities for writing.

The sight words that we are learning are often small words which can be built upon when reading and writing. An example of this are the words s-an-d p-it. The children were able to create two new words from two small sight words 'an' and 'it'. We then wrote sentences using the words 'sand pit'. The children are now on the hunt for their sight words in larger words. What a fantastic learning experience this has been!
