MATHS HOME ACTIVITY: Adding and Taking Away

My children, Siena and Zac, were collecting autumn leaves for a craft activity.
Siena collected 7 leaves and Zac collected 4 leaves. They worked out that together they had 11 leaves. (7+4=11)
Sadly, by the time they got home 5 out of the 11 leaves were crushed. 11 take away 5 left them with 6 leaves. (11-5=6)

What have you added together at your house?
Can you tell us the story and put it in a number sentence?

  1. Adrian said he was hungry so we made ravioli, Adrian asked how long will it take, the packet said 3min, the time was 4:18 so we added 3minutes to the clock so the ravioli will be ready at 4:21
Adrian had 24 ravioli in his bowl, all except 1was eaten Adrian ate 23 ravioli
    24-23= 1.

  2. Olivia - I went to my Nan and Pop's house and we visited the vegetable garden.
I picked 4 red onions and 1 red capsicum.
    Altogether I had 5 vegetables.
We cooked 1 red onion and 1 capsicum.
Which left 3 vegetables for later.
    5 - 2 = 3

  3. Cadence was looking through his Star Wars light sabers and noticed that one was broken out of the seven which he owned.
He took the broken one away and counted that he had 6 light sabers left

  4. Jemma's mummy buys a loaf of bread on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This is 5 loaves of bread. On Monday and Thursday she buys an extra loaf for Jemma's Uncle Chris. This is 2 more loaves. 5 + 2 = 7
