Volume and Capacity

These are two words we used a little over the last couple of weeks. Volume is how much (we used water) a container can hold. We checked the capacity of various containers by pouring coloured water into them. We compared the capacity of each container by pouring the water from one container to another and marking where the water reached. We could then decide which container had the greater volume.

Next we compared the volume of three 600mL water bottles. We did this by filling one bottle then pouring the water into the other two to check the capacity of each. We found that even though each bottle is shaped differently, the volume of each is the same.

This is a concept we will explore further during Developmental Play, but in the mean time perhaps you can do some experimenting at home and share what you found by commenting on this post.
