MATHS HOME ACTIVITY: 3D Shape Hunt

During the weekend Zac went on a 3D Shape hunt through our home.

He chose to organise his findings into shape categories that went like this:

Spheres: an orange, mum's exercise ball, my tennis ball, my soccer ball
Cylinders: the vase, the blue flexitub, a candle
Cubes: the ottoman and photo box
Rectangular Prisms: tissue box, cereal box, mum's phone, dvd case

What items can you find at your house? Can you explain why you think an object is a an example of a particular 3D shape?

Share your findings in the comment section below.
I can't wait to show our class what you have found!

What is a Vowel?

In KC we have jumped into this term and we're moving ahead at full steam! There are so many things we have started working on that that it will take me a while to write posts that cover it all.

In English, our study of sounds and words has taken us into a study of vowels. We have identified the five vowel sounds and we are concentrating hard on noticing the way our lips stretch when we form each sound. We're also noticing the way we use our voice when we say each sound.

Vowels are important because they are in the middle of so many words. By being able to identify the vowel sound, we are equipped with the tools we need to become better readers and writers. Our next step will be to use our knowledge of vowels to learn about word families, that is, groups of words containing the same vowel sound.

If you ask your child about vowels, I wonder what they will say...

MATHS HOME ACTIVITY: Adding objects together

In class today, one of the children explained that when he adds two numbers together he starts with the larger number, then he makes the smaller number using his fingers, then counts to find the total.

He explained his strategy so well that it prompted us to talk about the next step, which is the strategy of counting on.
Our question was 5 + 4, so we began with 5 then used our fingers to count 6, 7, 8, 9. Therefore, 5 + 4 = 9.

In our Math Daily 3 activities we used counters, drawings and fingers.

What have you added together at home?
What strategy did you use to get your total?
